If you need a great audio recorder for the least amount of money, the new Tascam DR-40X is probably the best option available. Get the full story here ▶️
If you primarily record audio with external dynamic microphones like the Shure SM58, the Tascam DR-40X isn’t the best choice for you.
For everyone else, the DR-40X is your best budget-friendly option. It works wonderfully with condenser mics, like shotguns, wireless, and large diaphragms. Plus, it handles line-level audio excellently.

Having 2020 model of zoom h6 in production what would you consider?
Im torn apart between the two.
I do like almos every thing on dr49x but the fact that h6 has mic capsule temovable and 6 channels… But no reverb…
OMG, marry me! That was so helpful, and funny.
Bravo 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏
Could you make a video about how to use as a interface on PC?
Hi
With the latest firmware the DR40 also has 128GB capacity and auto tone.
Fantastic overview! I've been using this mic on my recent videos and love it!
Good stuff. Do you also have a tutorial on the basics for operating. Having a hard time getting arms around this.
GREAT GREAT GREEAAAT VIDEO!
Dang…that was well done and fun. The history was very interesting too. Thank you!
Your voice sounds like Daniel Johnson
Can it be used as a sub mic?
Sam! When recording 4 channel using the built in ones and just one external condenser, is it possible to have the external source recorded in stereo? I am getting just the left channel
Nice video!
Can a Samson co3u USB microphone connect with the tascam dr 40x? Or will it not work? Just curious because i got a Samson usb condensator microphone.
Nagra! DAT Recorders…omg. I remember these audio recording machines and tech. I love the future. Just ordered my DR-40X for the A-B mic capabilities in recording ambient/environmental sound. Great informative video. Thanks.
What a pleasant video! Love the history and the way you compared the old with new. Thanks for solving my doubts about dr40x. I don't care about 'noisy' floor, for almos everything, we have post process for that! Thanks again ♥
you got a comparison with the 44WL?
Great Job… very helpful!
This video was fantastic! Thank you for beeing so neardy and cool at the same time 🙂

I have never seen a review from you that doesnt just about cover the whole topic
Anyway i have never heard about you talking about ;
3.5mm Line to Microphone Attenuator Cable for DSLR Camera/Recorder
Do you need it of does it help or prevent from extra noise from cheap cables ?
Thank you. Very informative. I am thinking gof getting one and your reviews helped.
Amazing review, Sam. I'm currently shopping for a device for recording audio from DJ boards at weddings and other events. The Zoom 6 I rented recently had a cool feature where I could take a Line out feed through its dedicated port and send to my camera through a wireless Receiver/Transmitter unit. Though I see Line Out listed among the outputs of the DR-40x, I'm uncertain how it works because the "line out" doubles as a earphone port.
I'm interested to know if it can work as the Zoom 6 does. I will appreciate your feedback.
Hi! Can u also use the DR-40X as main microphone while you are filming with your iphone? Ps: your video is very clear!
Hei 🙂
So, i have to choose between this new beautiful model from Tascam, the DR40X and the Zoom H5, considering that it will be used for weddings, mostly from Dj's mixer, what would you choose? Thanks 😎
Nice overview Sam and I enjoyed the recorder history . I have the older DR-40 so I I also appreciate the comparison between new and old. One point I am unclear about is that you indicate the the DR-40s have 4 independent channels and I find that not to be quite true for the DR-40. In comparison, the Zoom H4N can record a mono track to any of its 4 tracks. The DR-40 can only multitrack by recording a stereo pair over a prerecorded stereo pair. Has this changed with the DR-40X?
So what is best do you think, for both line level recording, as well as using dynamic mic external mic input? I want to record two channel (stereo) mixes from my dj mixer output, over 6-9 hour events. I currently use my laptop and audio interface but want to have something that doesn't need to be plugged in (sometimes I get some noise through monitor speakers if laptop plugged in) and takes up less room.
Really great video! It's funny because I just got a new dynamic mic for videos and didn't realize dynamic mics could have issues with these recorders
Hilarious and informative. Thank you!
I am having issues using headphone while recording audio. I can’t hear myself. Can you show us how to set it up?
Thank you
