Robocalls: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

Robocalls are a growing problem. If only we could make the FCC care a little bit more about fixing it.

  • They do this shit because they know that if you can completely ignore them for 7 years the debt disappears even from your credit score. But that means no contact at all, never respond to a email, phone call or letter. And on the plus side you only have to ignore them for a year or two before they give up and start harassing someone else.

  • Think that's harassment, how about reporting to credit agency's that you owe 50times more than you do as a scare tactic. Then fixing it a couple weeks later, and doing the same thing they with the same debt 3times over 6months.

  • Big problem of robocalls and fraudulent illegal calls from Indians trying to rob Americans. Put them all in Jail

  • Focusing on robocalls is too narrow. All telephone solicitation directed at individuals should require a prior business relationship and consent. For the record, if you call me and I don't know who you are, I simply assume you're a criminal. It's true often enough that it makes no sense to make any other assumption. If I do somehow answer the phone, I will give you no money, and if I give you any information it will be because I think lying to you benefits me ("Are you a registered voter?" "No. Thank you for ending the annoying call."). Regarding the consent in the user agreement… If you're someone I do business with and you don't immediately agree to cease unwanted calls when asked, you have simply guaranteed that I will have no future business with you, and if it's practical I will terminate any existing business as soon as possible. Businesses only get away with that crap because customers don't hold them accountable.

  • I just got a text from my carrier that for a fee, they will screen my calls for scam calls. For a fee. Oh wait, I'm sorry…it says," Keep on screening and blocking your calls with ___ Name ID". So for a fee, I can do what I'm already doing, but now I can pay THEM for me doing it.

  • The robocalls continue to harass us almost a year later. This seems like a never-ending story. The government has recently gone after the US providers that bring in the IP phone traffic from overseas and drop it on the phone networks in the US and this may help a little.

  • I have "Do Not Disturb" setting turned on in my phone, with the exception of those already in my contact list. However, that setting only silences the ringtone. The phone is still (silently) ringing, the screen is on and a call is displayed as incoming. Most of the time I don't notice them, and block each and every gawdamn one when I check. But sometimes the phone is within sight and I see the call coming in. Here is my procedure:

"Hello! I am a Jedi. You do not want to sell me anything. You want to go home and rethink your life."
Fucking seriously?!! No bullshitting you, as I'm typing this comment. I get a robocall! No shit. This time I just screamed "FUCK YOU!" as loud as I could.
    Here's the number… have fun… 1-740-409-2086

Anyway.. I either finish off my Jedi thing with " STOP SCAMMING PEOPLE!" or "GO JUMP IN THE GANGES WITH THE REST OF THE TRASH AND SEWAGE!" Because 95% of these fucks are in India, and the Ganges sewer (a.k.a. "river" ) is sacred to them.

  • The Chinese and North Korea are perpetrators of the ongoing spy program against the Five Eyes. Firstly, the Chinese did the 419 scams online other than the Nigerians, and hardware hacking with the US military. They need funding for their experiments. It is all a part of their biological-chemical warfare experiment that the Communists screwed up when creating the new virus and also the Chinese were responsible for Robocalls originating from rural China farmers whose crops failed. And now they created a Wuhan coronavirus that they can't contain, and now everyone is being affected. Some of them are fleeing China on either vacation or business travels worldwide because they don't want to be hassled or bored to death by the quarantines. All of Asia has infections and everyone and everywhere in Asia should be quarantined before it's too late.

  • Are robocalls a problem related to English speaking people?

I mean in many other countries, we haven't heard of those robocalls
And I was thinking, maybe it's because those calls are made from India and Pakistan who happen to speak English
which would explain why we don't receive robocalls in non English speaking countries

or does it have to do with the privacy laws?

  • "can you hear me okay?" NEVER say yes… They get you to say "YES" into your phone as they are recording you and now they have YOU saying "YES" in YOUR own voice on tape. They can use this to access your technical devices with your own voice giving permission/access to anything with VOICE control/access on it. NEVER say yes

I get ya'. There were two dolphins in the net. Oh, excuse me! There were 400 BIG dolphins not to mention Jetravart mice? sic. I don't get this. There are bards and minstrels talking about gypsies. Which one is which? Hey, man. I'll skip the "Julien Sorel" fun (see, "The Red and the Black," Stendahl). My dad actually tied to drop me off at a Seminary once. Hey, there's no Library of Alexandria or relevant Gutenberg contributions, okay? So…I'll skip the priesthood and get some real books. Sorry, Jewry, about the chemistry, maths, and the Occult but they are pretty much irrelevant now anyway. It wasn't my fault, obviously.
